Levels of Abstraction

When modelling a campaign, it is useful to use eight levels of abstraction to represent the different levels of process, cause and effect that can be represented by a particular model of a military campaign. These levels also correspond to the degree to which the human representations are aggregated. The levels, described in the following, also have parallels to the layers of the Swiss Cheese model.

Level 1 – Grand Strategic

The grand strategic level is the highest level at which organizational factors come into play. Essentially this level sets the strategic goals that provide the context for the organizational factors. In the case of the United Kingdom, for example, at the strategic level, military forces are employed to fulfil the aims of Government policy. Strategy is developed by the Chiefs of Staff under the direction of the Secretary of State for Defence.
